HOLE 1

To score well at the Dunes Course you need a good start. Take a driver and fade it around the steep, rustic bunker on the right. From here, a short iron is all that's necessary. But select the right one - getting the ball on the correct level of the green is key to avoiding a three-putt.

The longest par 3 at the Dunes Course comes early. But don't let it intimidate you. The green is large, and even if the tee shot comes up short, par is still quite manageable, thanks to a bail-out area front left. Six bunkers short right will gobble up the weak slice.

A solid drive down the right side of the fairway leaves a good angle to attack the elevated green with a mid iron. A massive bunker guards the green front left. Clear it and birdie becomes realistic. The green's bowled effect allows balls to feed toward the hole.

The first of back-to-back par 5s is a strong one - it plays toward the ocean, is mostly uphill and the green doesn't reveal itself until you are inside 150 yards. First-time players of the course will be wise to play it as a three-shot hole.

More of a birdie chance than the previous par 5. A big drive between the fairway bunkers should catch the downslope and make you consider going for the green in two. But beware: Danger - in the form of menacing bunkers - lurks all around the slightly elevated green.

This gentle dogleg left par 4 can either be a monster or a golden opportunity... depending on which direction the wind is blowing. Either way, the tee shot is down the right side, to avoid the gigantic waste bunker down the left. Plenty of bail-out room right of the green.

The shortest par 4 on the front features another long waste bunker down the left, but a good drive over the right corner of it should result in a genuine birdie chance. Alternatively, a rescue club down the right side leaves a short, uphill wedge to a small green.

A lot shorter than the initial par 3 - it plays considerably downhill - but shame on anyone who takes it lightly. Bunkers surround the green, which is as tricky as any on the golf course. The Marble Mountains provide a distracting backdrop.

Benign from the tee, the front's finisher wreaks more havoc the closer you get to the hole. A short approach will trickle all the way down to a collection area at least 60 yards from any pin position. Commit to your second shot and hit it with confidence.

Here begins a back 9 as good as you'll find anywhere. The longest par 5 on the course is slotted between towering dunes and faces the majestic Marble Mountains. The winding journey culminates at a green bisected by a treacherous ridge.

This is one of golf's best par 3s. Downhill to a wide green, three bunkers - stepped beautifully from left to right - guard the front, while another lurks behind. A right-to-left tee shot that rides the prevailing wind is the play. Beware the subtle breaks in the green.

HOLE 12

Straightaway, but far from straightforward. Massive fairway mounding causes a blind second shot. Take a slightly more lofted club to ensure clearance, and pick the right line so as to have an approach from the short stuff. The green angles hard from right to left.

HOLE 13

The course's most difficult hole is a bear from start to finish. A strong, right-to-left drive, over another mammoth fairway mound, will leave a mid iron in. Take an extra club to account for a slightly elevated green with a false front. The dance floor is deceptively deep.

The shortest par 4 is made even shorter by an elevated tee. Blast a drive over the trap in the middle of the fairway and you might just be putting for eagle. Anything right or left of that line, however, will most likely end up in a greenside bunker. A safer play is rescue-wedge.

HOLE 15

The first of three holes on the ocean side of the road. A natural water hazard abuts the left side of the fairway, but there's plenty of room behind the cluster of trees that encroach from the right. The green slopes back to front, but don't be too long - the rear trap is virtually death.

The course's signature hole, backdropped as it is by the sea and, on a clear day, the Cham Islands. Those who are able to stay focused, account for the wind and play a low-spin shot will be rewarded with a memorable birdie chance.

A river runs through this mid-length par 4... twice - although only the second occurrence, about 100 yards short of the green, can be a factor. (And even then only for the biggest hitters.) A good strategy is wood-mid iron, aiming left with the approach in order to avoid all the native trouble right.

HOLE 18

Not an easy finishing hole, requiring a drive just right of center to avoid the menacing bunker on the left side of the fairway. Skirt it with a strong fade and expect it to carom down into a swale, significantly shortening the hole. Play your approach out to the right and watch it feed off the bank onto the green.
